While South Africa National Treasury displayed no mission to introduce the e-levy to its citizens so that to faster the financial inclusion efforts and therefore poverty eradication,this is not the case for Tanzania,Malawi and Ghana!
Tanzania Treasury recently operationise the E-levy Bank tansactions starting from July 2022 only months after the introduction of the similar move on Mobile Money Transactions which sparked public outcry across the Country and many thanks should go to a “Mother of Nation”,President Samia Suluhu Hassan for her adjustments.
This time around Tanzania should not easily get into trap which have already caught several African Countries of Ghana,Kenya,Malawi,Cameroon,and Ivory Coast where similar move have caused “wananchi” into waging an online petition”EndMobileMoney Tax”,in Cameroon!
In Ghana forexample,after a months of heated public debate in 2021,in April 2022 adjusted the taxable amount from 1.75% down to 1.5% as President of Tanzania Mama Samia Suluhu Hassan did last time on mobile money transactions!
If this time again this levy met with resistance from all sectors of the society then is going to injure Samia’s government track record standing with poor ordinary citizens!”wananchi” who have been the key drivers of the CCM’s election win!
According to GSM Associations,the Annual State of the Mobile Money Transaction indicates a record of 1 Trilion USD in Africa only in 2021.The volume of one-one transactions was up more than 1.5 million in every hour added!
As the Economist Gulu,the Professor from UDSM, Humfrey Mushi together with the IMF experts recently warned to governments that mass e-levy nets could be fiscally inquitable and hinder financial inclusion efforts in African Continent!
GMSA this year 2022 conducted a study on “The Impact of the E-levy on Mobile Transaction in Tanzania “since the introduction of new law last year of 2021.
“… immediately when the tax went into effect,we see a 38% drop in one to one transfers which signify “wananchi”regression cash……”.
Is the President Samia Suluhu Hassan again going to intervine the National Treasury “creativity”?,Will the CCM came out and join wananchi considering that Samia knows that “CCM ni Chama cha wakulima na wafanyakazi”.Is Mzee Kinana a CCM political gulu remain silence on this matter?,let us wait and see!
